Denotation: a magazine with a student at the centre of the front cover.
Connection: education and lifestyle.
Mise en scene:
Costume: he is wearing a black jacket over a white t-shirt, dark jeans to match, a silver chain with a cross which could represent his religion and could be important to him. He also has a watch at the wrist this gives an impression that he’s dressed smart and casual.
Props: he’s holding books which says, ‘Law, Business and Society’ which could represent the subjects he’s studying and to further magazine to its connection of education.
Lighting: the background of this image is low key lighting, but the image of the student is high key, so they lighting must be put together to contrast each other.
Non verbal communication: the student’s body language shows that he’s strong and confident. His facial expression is happy and relaxed which could impact on his personality.
Setting: the setting could be in a studio as the magazine has no particular background or place.
The magazine features:
Masthead: the masthead design is a simple type face, but as it’s a bright colour contrasts with the light and dark and it is placed behind the image of the student to feature the image.
Date line: is at the top right corner of the page and was published in ‘summer 2009’ could be implied that it is a seasonal magazine. E.g. winter 2009
The main image: he image is placed in the middle of the magazine to feature this person “Jeffrey ‘Assassin’ Campbell”, (the words implies, it’s the students name)
Cover lines: there are large quantities of cover lines that have been distributed around the image to make it the centre of attraction on the page. It also has different colours to contrast the image (white and yellow) to make the presentation attractive to the particular target audience.
The main cover line: its not to huge but it is readable and doesn’t take as much space, this leaver room for all the other cover lines.
Bar code: this code bar is used for retail purposes.

Denotation: A poster of a man holding a whip.
Connection: action, adventure, advertisement

Mise en- scene:
Costume: the male/ character is wearing an explorer costume, which consists of a khaki shirt and dirty trousers; this suggests that the genre of the movie is action and adventure.

Props: this person is in position of a whip and a gun, which resemble violence and implies that the film will contain violence and that and that there, could be an enemy or adversary in the characters way.

Lighting: the lighting used in this poster is a contrast of high and low key lighting which contrasts and makes the character stand out.

Setting: the background of the image is unusual and implies that the film’s quite scary but the type face at the bottom adds a cartoon element to the poster, which gives the audience or potential viewers a different impression that it's an action adventure.

This is my first time using Photoshop, and i think it went pretty well.


what i found easy was applying the words but difficicult to put the layers the right place correctly.
